Volunteer: Children's Vision Screener

Become a Certified Children's Vision Screener! Help us identify children with potential vision problems and set them on the road to healthy vision through children's vision screenings in your community.

Founded in 1958 by a group of dedicated volunteers, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin's mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight in Wisconsin communities. We envision a Wisconsin where everyone enjoys a lifetime of healthy vision and we work toward this goal by providing free, direct sight-saving services, such as vision screenings, throughout the state.

Volunteers help with vision screenings at schools and childcare centers throughout greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County that otherwise do not have the capacity to screen the children at their schools and centers. All volunteers are required to attend a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin sponsored Children's Vision Screener Training. The training will go over how to vision screen school-age and preschool age children and the last step is to attend a short virtual volunteer orientation. The children’s vision screening certification is good for 3 years. No previous experience with health care or vision screenings is necessary. This is an opportunity for individual adults, teens and small groups (maximum size of 5).

Volunteers are required to complete and pass a background check and Children’s Vision Screener Training before volunteering. To sign up for our online training, please email Breanna at breanna@pbwi.org for the sign-up link.

Time commitment: Vision screenings typically take place on weekday mornings. Depending on classroom size, screenings take between 1 and 3 hours. Vision screenings start in September and go through May.

Please contact Breanna Reckamp, Director of Operations, at breanna@pbwi.org or (414) 765-0505 to learn more and to sign up for a vision screener training.

Help a child shop and/or wrap and bag their perfect gifts for a special person or persons in their life. It's a heart warming experience! Please note: As part of our Child Protection Policies we will ask Individual Volunteers to complete a background check and volunteer application prior to volunteering.

How it works: SJA will collect donations of small gift items year around.

Our Early Childhood & K4-8th students will come in during a scheduled shopping time in December to shop for a gift for someone special in their life. Very young children will be assigned an angel helper to help them find just the right item.

Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Waukesha)

As a proud participant of the We Honor Veterans program, veteran or current military members will have the unique ability to support Heartland Hospice veteran patients through the "vets-for-vets" volunteer opportunity. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Vets-for-vets volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through active listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves.

We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our vets-for-vets volunteer opportunity is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitor volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location.

Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a TB test.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com or 414-944-2000 to learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!

Volunteer: Support hospice patients in their greatest hour of need: become a vigil volunteer! (Sussex)

Heartland Hospice

The vigil volunteer program is designed to keep vigil with patients and families during the dying process. A hospice vigil volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Support may involve prayer (reading from the Bible or other material that is comforting for patient), providing respite to family (allowing them to step away and grab a bite to eat/take a break) or simply being present...providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone. Vigil volunteers, in collaboration with the hospice team, can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

Our vigil volunteer program is more of an "on-call" opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of patient's family or care-giving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer's location and availability.

Applicants must attend an orientation to learn about the philosophy of hospice, the role of a vigil volunteer, and skills related to caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Emphasis is on providing comfort during the dying process. Requirements for vigil volunteers: 18 years of age or older, complete a TB test, must agree to background and reference check, must be appropriately coping with any personal losses, impeccable communication skills, sound judgment regarding issues of death and dying, and ability to work independently with indirect supervision. Characteristics that Heartland is looking for in a vigil volunteer include: a positive outlook on life, flexibility, empathy, sensitivity to issues around death and dying, compassion, a willingness to help others and ability to work as a member of the hospice team. Reliable transportation is a must!

If you live in Sussex, or a surrounding community, and would like to provide support to hospice patients during their greatest hour of need, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000; cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com. We're waiting to hear from you!

If you live in Waukesha, or a surrounding community, and would like to provide support to hospice patients during their greatest hour of need, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000; cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com. We're waiting to hear from you!

Volunteers are the HEART of Heartland Hospice! We are looking for more therapy dog/handler teams in Waukesha, or a surrounding community, to enrich the lives of our hospice patients. The pet visitor volunteer, along with their certified therapy dog, can encourage an emotional connection, alleviate stress and feelings of isolation, promote self-esteem and provide meaningful interactions/activities to support life review and the sharing of memories. Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Volunteers and their furry friends have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients’ lives... a smile and reassurance during what often can be a very difficult and sensitive time.

If you have a friendly canine who has a lot of love to give and spreads joy wherever she/he goes, this is the opportunity for you! Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000 or cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com for more info!

PLEASE NOTE: FOR THIS VOLUNTEER ROLE, CANINE MUST BE CURRENTLY CERTIFIED AS A THERAPY ANIMAL. There are many organizations that provide the therapy animal certification, including Alliance of Therapy Dogs (www.therapydogs.com) and Therapy Dogs International (http://www.tdi-dog.org/). Let us know if we can assist you!

Handlers will also need to attend a Heartland Hospice volunteer orientation; complete application paperwork, including background and reference checks; and get a TB test.

Volunteer: Host a Move-In Kit Drive!

Host a Move-In Kit Drive at your workplace, place of worship, or school and help families moving from homelessness to housing. A Move-In Kit can include:

Laundry basketCleaning suppliesPaper towelsBroomMopDishrackBasic Kitchen Utensils

However, there is no wrong recipe for a Move-In Kit. All household items are welcome and help families establish a fresh start. Please note that Hope House cannot accept furniture or large appliances due to limited capacity.

Why Your Drive Matters

At 6 years old, a significant portion of Brielle’s experience included being homeless. Brielle’s family had been without housing for a year, doubling up with family and friends and when that was no longer an option, staying in emergency shelters before being connected with Hope House and moving into an apartment. Shortly after Brielle’s family moved into the apartment, their Case Manager, Leslie, visited with a move-in kit of household items and cleaning supplies. Something case managers at Hope House can do with the support of your donations.

Brielle excitedly greeted Leslie, gave her a big hug, and as her family went through the supplies, she found the dish detergent and said excitedly, “and now we get to wash our own dishes!” Brielle’s excitement for a task many take for granted is a reminder of the power of your support - providing stability, dignity, and the comfort of home to families.

How to Host a Drive

Hosting a drive is easy and you know your community best. We suggest having solid start and end dates for taking collections, sharing stories like the one above, and leaning into the strengths of your workplace, place of worship, or community. Hope House can provide signs and speak to your group (when available). We do ask that donations be dropped off at Hope House (209 W. Orchard St., Milwaukee, WI) at the end of the drive as we have limited capacity for pick-ups. Schedule drop off in advance and we'll be happy to give you a tour and share more of the amazing work being done together!

Being in the hospital can be difficult for an older person and can cause a decline in their physical and mental abilities. HELP strives to keep the older patients' minds and bodies active, speeding the healing and recovery process.

You will receive specific training in four volunteer intervention programs including: daily visitor, mealtime assistance, early mobilization, and therapeutic activities. You will be able to provide encouragement and companionship to older patients and families.

Several positions include:

Daily Visitor Program - Daily visits to keep participating patients alert and oriented by providing daily schedules and answering questions, while providing support and socialization. Mealtime Assistance Program Provides companionship and assistance at meals if necessary. Early Mobilization Program - Provides daily assistance with walking and range of motion exercise. Therapeutic Activities Program - Provides stimulating and enjoyable activities to help patients stay mentally focused and provide recreation. Volunteers also assist with stress-reducing relaxation exercises.
