The clothing bank located at the Women's Shelter on the near south side of Milwaukee is always in need of organization.  It is a great opportunity for small groups of individuals.  The clothes need to be sorted by size, season and gender.  Perfect opportunity for one person or a group up to 10.   This opportunity can be done almost anytime. Very flexible schedule.  WIth the seasons changing we need to organize switching out the clothing to match the season.  Very flexible opportunity.  This is a great opportunity for someone who needs a flexible schedule.

Volunteers acting as mentors and role models for  the children of the shelter. Depending on the number of children, the ages of the children and how many volunteers will determine what activities will take place each evening.   The Children's program takes place immediately following dinner. Dinner is served at 6 pm.. so somewhere around 6:45pm.  The activity could be as simple as playing games with the children, arts and crafts or helping with homework.  Activities depend on the ages of the children.

Share your love of reading with children ages 6 weeks - 5 years at Next Door!

By volunteering to be a reader friend with our Books for Kids program, you will help increase our student's language, literacy skills and foster a life-long love of reading. 

Reading is done one-on-one during the child's library time at Next Door Milwaukee.

Read with Me is offered Tuesday - Thursday, 8:45am-11am.

Become a Certified Children's Vision Screener! Help us identify children with potential vision problems and set them on the road to healthy vision through children's vision screenings in your community.

Founded in 1958 by a group of dedicated volunteers, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin's mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight in Wisconsin communities. We envision a Wisconsin where everyone enjoys a lifetime of healthy vision and we work toward this goal by providing free, direct sight-saving services, such as vision screenings, throughout the state. 

Volunteers help with vision screenings at schools and childcare centers throughout greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County that otherwise do not have the capacity to screen the children at their schools and centers. All volunteers are required to attend a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin sponsored Children's Vision Screener Training. The training will go over how to vision screen school-age and preschool age children and the last step is to attend a short virtual volunteer orientation. The children’s vision screening certification is good for 3 years. No previous experience with health care or vision screenings is necessary. This is an opportunity for individual adults, teens and small groups (maximum size of 5).   

Volunteers are required to complete and pass a background check, take the Children’s Vision Screener Training and Volunteer Orientation before volunteering. The online training and volunteer orientation take about 2 hours in total. To sign up for our online training, please email Breanna at breanna@pbwi.org for the sign-up link.

Time commitment: Vision screenings typically take place on weekday (Monday - Friday) mornings. Depending on classroom size, screenings take between 1 and 3 hours. Vision screenings start in September and go through May.

Engage with museum guests at the All Aboard model railroad exhibit! The five train, 35-foot HO-scale layout features Milwaukee landmarks. The Conductor may be tasked with basic daily upkeep but will mainly engage with guests of all ages during open hours. The main goal of this role is to answer questions about the layout and facilitate understanding of how railroads work and have impacted the development of Milwaukee and innovation in general. Shifts available Wednesday-Sunday 9am-4pm.

Training and background materials provided.

Conductors can be seated for portions of their shift, but some standing, and walking will be required.

There are invaders in the Great Lakes! Engage with guests to teach them about the aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes Future exhibit. Hosts will use a variety of preserved specimens and occasionally a live specimen to educate visitors about the damaging effects common aquatic invasive species have on the Great Lakes ecosystem, as well as control and prevention methods.

Training and background materials provided.

AIS Cart Hosts will need to stand most of their shift and be able to push the cart into position.

Volunteers in this role support La Casa de Esperanza’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program by serving as the first point of contact for clients during their tax appointments. Program Support Assistant / Intake Screener volunteers play a vital role in ensuring accurate, efficient, and welcoming tax preparation services. Key Responsibilities

• Welcome and assist clients at the beginning of their tax appointments (in-person or virtually)

• Make copies of tax documents and identification cards

• Guide clients through the completion of required intake and consent forms, ensuring all questions are fully answered

• Review intake forms for completeness and accuracy

• Organize and deliver client files to IRS-certified tax preparers for review

• Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information Training & Certification

We are a community-based nonprofit agency dedicated to helping individuals and families achieve stability and self-sufficiency. Pathfinders is seeking support from community members to assemble Welcome Home Kits for youth transitioning from homelessness and housing instability into their first apartment. Moving in is an exciting step for our young people. However, without everyday items, simple tasks such as taking a shower or cooking a meal, remain a luxury. These kits equip our youth with the basic essentials we all need to function comfortably and safely in our homes.

Event date is Thursday November 19th at Brookfield Conference Center in Brookfield, WI

We're looking for a volunteer to help remove a large amount of brush and yard waste from our property and haul it off to the dump. Volunteer must have their own truck and/or trailer. They must be able to load and transport everything by themselves. This is a great opportunity for someone who already has city dump access and wanted to help with a much needed clean up! City of Waukesha resident preferred for easy proximity to Waukesha Drop-off Center, but waste can be dropped off at anyone's local dump that they are able to access. Every center does have a mandatory fee that will also need to be paid by the volunteer at drop off. City of Waukesha's Drop-off Center is $3.00 per vehicle load & $4.00 per trailer load. They take cash or check only. This will be about 1-2 loads.

However, there is no wrong recipe for a Move-In Kit. All household items are welcome and help families establish a fresh start. Please note that Hope House cannot accept furniture or large appliances due to limited capacity.

Why Your Drive Matters

At 6 years old, a significant portion of Brielle’s experience included being homeless. Brielle’s family had been without housing for a year, doubling up with family and friends and when that was no longer an option, staying in emergency shelters before being connected with Hope House and moving into an apartment. Shortly after Brielle’s family moved into the apartment, their Case Manager, Leslie, visited with a move-in kit of household items and cleaning supplies. Something case managers at Hope House can do with the support of your donations.

Brielle excitedly greeted Leslie, gave her a big hug, and as her family went through the supplies, she found the dish detergent and said excitedly, “and now we get to wash our own dishes!” Brielle’s excitement for a task many take for granted is a reminder of the power of your support - providing stability, dignity, and the comfort of home to families.

How to Host a Drive

Hosting a drive is easy and you know your community best. We suggest having solid start and end dates for taking collections, sharing stories like the one above, and leaning into the strengths of your workplace, place of worship, or community. Hope House can provide signs and speak to your group (when available). We do ask that donations be dropped off at Hope House (209 W. Orchard St., Milwaukee, WI) at the end of the drive as we have limited capacity for pick-ups. Schedule drop off in advance and we'll be happy to give you a tour and share more of the amazing work being done together!

Your talent will make a great impact on improving the quality work that Aurora Health Care’s medical professionals provide to the patients. Regularly, Aurora teammates complete competencies in simulation labs that require an actor to function as the patient. This is where you can assist. You will be a vital asset to the competency process by providing real life simulations of (fill in)

Aurora would be happy to accept 8-10 volunteer actors to meet the needs of this opportunity.

Simulations occur 3-4 times per month and last 1-3 hours each.

We would love to have you on our team!  We are looking for volunteers to call inpatients while in the hospital to welcome them to our care, relay visitation guidelines and inquire how their stay has been.

Concierge Admission Program (CAP) include the following tasks for volunteers:

Advocate Aurora computer access is provided for all volunteers.

Training consists of 4-6 hours. Volunteers will learn to place and conduct patient calls with the guidance of our training coordinator, and when the volunteer feels confident with the call script and all questions/concerns are answered, they may begin to make calls on their own.

Do you possess skills in data entry, have good social skills, and take pleasure in assisting others? Consider volunteering to help low-income clients prepare their Federal and State income tax returns through a FREE Tax Preparation Program! In this role, tax preparers will work directly with clients to prepare their tax returns. Volunteers in the Tax Preparer role must also complete IRS certifications. Training sessions are provided at our site to assist with these certifications.

La Casa de Esperanza's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program aims to support low-income individuals and families in claiming all the tax credits they are entitled to. These households often rely on their tax refunds to pay for essential services like utilities, medical bills, and other fundamental needs.

All volunteers in the VITA program will become IRS-Certified. La Casa provides FREE training for each volunteer, and our staff will be available to support you at all times. Volunteers are needed for a commitment of 3+ hours per week from Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 am and 7:30 pm.

Looking to make a difference in your community?

Literacy Services of Wisconsin is excited to now be offering GED tutoring at the Milwaukee County Jail (MCJ)! We are looking for more tutors to help us expanding this program. Watch this video to learn more about this program!

The GED helps non-traditional students earn a high school credential and consists of 4 standardized tests in the subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Volunteer tutors in this program will work with students virtually to build the knowledge necessary to pass each test. Preference will be given for tutors willing to help with more than one subject.

LSW believes in the importance of equitable access to education and is excited to partner with volunteers and MCJ to help provide transformational opportunities for every student in our service area.

Weekday Meal Program (Breakfast or Lunch Serve): We are in need of volunteers to help our kitchen staff prep and serve Breakfast or Lunch on Fridays. The tasks involve helping with preparation of the meal and setting it up to serve. Serving the meal to homeless and low-income individuals and families. Light clean-up after serving which includes wiping down tables and helping with cleaning dishes. Reoccurring weekly commitment preferred. 

We appreciate you supporting our mission of Reducing the risks of poverty by helping people (primarily homeless and low-income) in Waukesha County meet basic needs. Hope Center is a non-profit organization that has been serving the basic needs of financial assistance, food, and clothing in Waukesha County for more than thirty years.

Clothing Shop – Guest Services: This consists of checking clients in and out of the clothing store during store hours. Work directly with the clients assisting them with clothing selection, record and bag the items they selected. This has some training involved and we request you commit to a 4 hour shift 1 day a week.

We appreciate you supporting our mission of Reducing the risks of poverty by helping people (primarily homeless and low-income) in Waukesha County meet basic needs. Hope Center is a non-profit organization that has been serving the basic needs of financial assistance, food, and clothing in Waukesha County for more than thirty years.

During operational & non-operational hours, help straighten, sort, size, and stock donated clothing at the Clothing Shop for low-income or homeless individuals.

Volunteers should be at least 16 years of age.

We have:

Monday - Friday 9 am - 4 pm; minimum 2-hour shifts.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Meta House strives to provide a lunch for each outpatient client while they're here receiving services. Many of our clients face food insecurity; your generous donation of bagged lunches ensures they have a full belly so they can fully engage in their recovery journey.

DETAILS

We ask volunteers to assemble and donate a minimum of 20 bag lunches, including a sandwich and at least two sides, packed in a paper bag. We welcome your creativity! Some donors include affirmations or uplifting quotes that help clients navigate challenging days. Lunches need to be dropped off by noon on the reserved date. We welcome volunteers to participate one-time, weekly, monthly - everyone is invited to get involved!

With over a hundred years of dedicated service to our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities with the crucial help of volunteers, offer companionship and support to older and disabled adults at our Adult Day Center.

The Adult Day Center offers older adults and adults with disabilities who require extra care as an alternative to a nursing home or attendant care facility, acting as a place where they can come during the day and enjoy fun, relaxing activities while interacting with others. Catholic Charities strives to maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each participant in the delivery of services to them, as well as to assist in maintaining a safe, neat, and clean environment. We provide certified nursing assistants to respond to care needs, offer varied daily programming based on participants’ needs and wants, recreational activities, snacks, and lunch.  

As a volunteer, you will engage with members in conversation and participate in the scheduled activities to provide social opportunities to bond with members at Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Center.

Occurs at Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Center (1919 N 60th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208)

Operates Monday through Friday in the mornings and afternoons (10:00 AM- 3:00 PM). Shifts occur in 2-hour increments either weekly or monthly

Participate in an in-person information session and tour the facility; complete any necessary training modules

*Note: Catholic Charities asks for a 6-month minimum commitment

You will complete online learning modules that will provide guidance to working with individuals who suffered from a stroke, have arthritis, Parkingson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, as well as developmental disabilities. You will learn best practices to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Must be 16 years old to volunteer alone, or 14 years old to volunteer with the volunteer’s parent present

Comfortable communicating in English with clients—additional language abilities are welcomed

Experience engaging with older adults or adults with developmental disabilities

Enjoys playing fun games with clients!

Engage older adults in your community and build lasting relationships that enable them with independence in a safe, supervised environment. Volunteering with us provides a rewarding opportunity to bond with often isolated adults. Come make someone’s day special at the Adult Day Center!

Put your organization and event planning experience to good use and join our Auxiliary. This group plans and organizes two major fundraisers each year.  Meetings are held once a month in the morning. Be prepared to have fun!

A Donation Drive is one of the best ways to help us serve our guests' needs!

Host a Donation Drive: A donation drive is a great option for individuals as well as groups, and helps build positive momentum in our community. Your donation drive could be for nonperishable foods, personal hygiene items, warm clothes, outerwear, shoes, or other needed items. Donations may be delivered to our shelter, or we can make arrangements to pick up your collected items!

Impact of Opportunity: Guest House does not have funds for food, hygiene, or clothing; we rely on the generosity of our community to help provide these basic necessities to our guests. During cold months, our greatest need is for men's winter coats in 2XL-4XL sizes. Boots and sneakers are always needed as well.

Guest House provides approximately 300-400 sandwiches daily to shelter guests and to those in need in our community. Our goal is to have sandwiches available to all those in need each day of the year.

Health Equity Lunch and Learn Program Serving Aging Black Women in Milwaukee.

Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic is the largest free clinic in Wisconsin. We are located in Milwaukee and primarily serve people who do not have health insurance, have low incomes, and face challenges to accessing care.

This role provides emotional support and comfort to our patients by interacting with them during recreational activity sessions. Readers Café is a fun volunteer opportunity for those who have a love for reading and working with elementary-aged students.

This program encourages the students’ interest in reading, while developing comprehension and social skills. This program typically runs for a 6-8 week session with multiple sessions in a year, sign up for as many as you’d like!

We provide our lunches to our youth and young adults Tuesday-Friday, and hot dinners on Wednesdays and Fridays. Our lunches are served in grab-n-go style and dinners can either be dropped off or served in-person. We offer our dinner meal donors the opportunity to serve their dinner in person and sit down with our youth and young adults to enjoy the meal they have prepared.

With the seasons and trends often changing, our clothing bank is always in need of a refresh. We are looking for a group to come on-site to help us organize the space.

The JCC has events throughout the year, and support is needed!

Tasks range from event set up, to guest welcoming and registration and event take-down. 

Be involved as little or as much as you would like, and know that every moment is so greatly appreciated!
