Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Waukesha) As a proud participant of the We Honor Veterans program, veteran or current military members will have the unique ability to support Heartland Hospice veteran patients through the "vets-for-vets" volunteer opportunity. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Vets-for-vets volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through active listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves. We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our vets-for-vets volunteer opportunity is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitor volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a TB test. Volunteer: Host a Move-In Kit Drive!Host a Move-In Kit Drive at your workplace, place of worship, or school and help families moving from homelessness to housing. A Move-In Kit can include: Laundry basketCleaning suppliesPaper towelsBroomMopDishrackBasic Kitchen UtensilsHowever, there is no wrong recipe for a Move-In Kit. All household items are welcome and help families establish a fresh start. Please note that Hope House cannot accept furniture or large appliances due to limited capacity. Why Your Drive Matters At 6 years old, a significant portion of Brielle’s experience included being homeless. Brielle’s family had been without housing for a year, doubling up with family and friends and when that was no longer an option, staying in emergency shelters before being connected with Hope House and moving into an apartment. Shortly after Brielle’s family moved into the apartment, their Case Manager, Leslie, visited with a move-in kit of household items and cleaning supplies. Something case managers at Hope House can do with the support of your donations. Brielle excitedly greeted Leslie, gave her a big hug, and as her family went through the supplies, she found the dish detergent and said excitedly, “and now we get to wash our own dishes!” Brielle’s excitement for a task many take for granted is a reminder of the power of your support - providing stability, dignity, and the comfort of home to families. How to Host a Drive Hosting a drive is easy and you know your community best. We suggest having solid start and end dates for taking collections, sharing stories like the one above, and leaning into the strengths of your workplace, place of worship, or community. Hope House can provide signs and speak to your group (when available). We do ask that donations be dropped off at Hope House (209 W. Orchard St., Milwaukee, WI) at the end of the drive as we have limited capacity for pick-ups. Schedule drop off in advance and we'll be happy to give you a tour and share more of the amazing work being done together! Agency: Hope House of Milwaukee, Inc. Volunteer: Buckthorn Busters Volunteer WorkdayBuckthorn, particularly common and glossy buckthorn, is a highly invasive plant in Wisconsin, posing significant threats to native ecosystems. Introduced as a hedge plant, it has spread aggressively, outcompeting native vegetation and disrupting natural habitats. Volunteer: Make Friendly Phone Calls to Seniors in your Community (Waukesha County)We are putting out a call for volunteers to join the Friendly Phone Call program! This program pairs an Eras client with a volunteer to have regular conversations by phone. The Friendly Phone Call program is a longer-term commitment (12+ weeks) and seeks to decrease social isolation and reduce the feelings of loneliness in our clients. How does it work? The volunteer will complete an application, be screened, and matched with a client(s). The volunteer calls the client to introduce themselves and, along with the client, decides when and how often they should connect (usually between 2-4 times a month, with calls typically lasting 20 minutes or less- but may be longer if time permits). After each call, the volunteer lets Eras know whether they were able to connect with the client (through a quick email, phone call, or online survey). If a client asks for a ride, assistance, resources, or has questions or concerns, volunteers should refer them to our main line. Eras staff will follow up on any additional needs that the client has. Repeat! To sign up to volunteer for this or other opportunities, please visit our website: https://eras.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer/ or call us at 414-488-6931 and we can assist you over the phone.
