COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING

This is our traditional one-to-one mentoring option where children and volunteer mentors meet 2-4 times per month throughout the Milwaukee and Waukesha communities. Matches spend time together engaged in activities they choose based on mutual interest. Each match is unique and develops a schedule that works for them. Match outings are flexible and easy to plan. Activities can include playing sports, going over schoolwork, visiting a museum, volunteering together, or just hanging out.

Matches can participate in many events planned by Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the year too! 

Bigs and Littles are matched based on similar interests, personalities, experiences, and distance from each other.

A Big Brother is matched with a Little Brother 6-16 years old. A Big Sister can be matched with either a Little Sister 6-16 years old, or a Little Brother 6-10. Big Couples are matched with a Little Brother 6-10 years old.

Bigs in this program must be 21+, have access to transportation and auto insurance, as well as commit to a minimum of a one year relationship. This ensures the children we serve have quality experiences and successful outcomes.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee serves a targeted population of youth ages 6-18 facing adversity throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Youth come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, and are generally enrolled in our program by their parent/guardian. Through Community-based mentoring, a child experiences a wide range of new, fun, and educational activities while gaining a new perspective of the world.

As a mentor you will:

Have fun with a purpose! Help defend a child's potential by avoiding risky behaviors. Help improve a child's social and emotional development. Receive ongoing professional support from a dedicated BBBS staff member.

Volunteer to set up a recruitment event at your place of employment, church, or with your social group or club to promote volunteer opportunities with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. Recruitment events can be hosting a Lunch & Learn or an informational table in a high volume area. By setting up a recruitment event, you will help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee connect with a larger audience to promote mentoring and reduce the number of youth waiting for a mentor. Setting up a recruitment event includes coordinating dates with our Recruitment Coordinator, promoting the event to draw an audience, and possibly helping with the event day of.

 

 

MENTOR2.0

mentor2.0 is a proven, technology-enriched mentoring program for high school students. It provides support and guidance, helping high school students graduate and succeed in both college and the workforce. This program combines in-person mentoring with safe, secure online communication and a comprehensive weekly curriculum focused on college/career readiness. Mentors are matched with a high school student, relationships continue throughout high school and through the first year of college.

Mentors and mentees are matched based on similar interests, personalities, college/career aspirations, and experiences. Matches interact weekly online and meet at a partner school monthly either in-person or virtually, while receiving professional guidance from BBBS staff.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have a college degree or equivalent combination of education, training, or experience, and commit to being a mentor for at least one year. Professionals with real life work experience are encouraged to apply.

As a mentor you will:

Help improve the graduation rates of first generation college students. Help catalyze a student’s future success by increasing college enrollment. Help prepare a student to succeed after high school. Receive ongoing professional support from a dedicated BBBS staff member.

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING

School-based mentoring is a facilitated one-to-one mentoring program for Bigs and Littles to meet weekly at a partner elementary or middle school location. This provides an exceptional learning opportunity for Littles and allows matches to work together to achieve educational goals. Bigs must be 18+ and out of high school, and commit to meeting with their Little once a week during the school year for at least one year. Matches work on homework, play games, and enjoy interactive activities together!

Bigs and Littles are matched based on similar interests, personalities, and experiences.

A Big Brother is matched with a Little Brother in 1st through 8th grade. A Big Sister can be matched with either a Little Sister in 1st through 8th grade, or a Little Brother in 1st through 5th grade.

As a mentor, you will:

Help a child develop positive attitudes towards school. Encourage educational success.  Help boost a child's confidence and improve their relationships with peers. Receive ongoing professional support from a dedicated BBBS staff member.

Being a volunteer mentor is a rewarding, meaningful, and fun experience! Mentoring relationships have a huge impact; helping to increase a child’s educational expectations, attitudes towards risky behavior, and social skills.
