Who We Are

The Resource For People with Disabilities

Independence First is Metro Milwaukee's first resource for people with disabilities. We offer more than 40 programs, workshops, and services of all kinds for various age groups. We work with individuals and families to support independence, providing resources such as benefits counseling, assistive technology, home modifications, personal care or supportive home care services, and more.

Over 50% of our staff, managers, and Board have disabilities themselves and this peer-led approach yields excellent outcomes.

What We Do

Mission: A non-profit agency directed by and for the benefit of people with disabilities, we primarily serve the four county metro Milwaukee area. Our mission is to facilitate empowerment through education, advocacy, independent living services, and coalition building. We promote diversity and multicultural participation in our operation and services.

Services: Individual and systemic advocacy, independent living skills training and workshops, peer support, information and referral, and other direct services.
