Individuals with disabilities struggle with lack of access to reliable transportation, healthcare, employment, education, food, and other resources. Despite being at an increased risk for COVID-19, people with disabilities face greater barriers to getting vaccines. In response, Independence First has taken steps to raise awareness of these issues through ad campaigns, vaccine clinics, and outreach. As an extension of those efforts, Independence First will host a Friendly Check In Phone Bank for Vaccines on Friday, January 27th from 12:30-4PM at the office at 540 S. 1st Street in Milwaukee.
Volunteers will call people with disabilities to check in and see if they are having any problems. Volunteers will also share information about the latest booster and how to find a vaccination site. If individuals would like to get a vaccine but face barriers to doing so, or if they are experiencing other issues, they can be connected to resources available to them through Independence First. These friendly phone calls will help connect people with disabilities to resources that can be life-saving, as well as help Independence First better understand the needs of the people they serve.
No experience or knowledge is needed to volunteer as training and a script will be provided, making this event a fun, easy way to help people with disabilities. Register as an individual or part of a group!
To sign up, or if you have questions or need accommodations to volunteer, please contact Lorna Pecard at LPecard@independencefirst.org
